A Certain Doubt edition by Michael Fincham Literature Fiction eBooks
Michael Fincham writes well, keeping this story with its basic conflict rolling along at an exciting pace. The setting is between the years 758 to 809 AD, when Charlemagne ruled much of Europe.
The conflict is about Guilhem, a man of good family, living in Narbonne, south of France. He has to maintain, as he grows up, his outward loyalty to the current practice, which was obeying without question the authority in all matters of the Church of Rome. At the same time, he is obliged by family loyalty to search in secret for evidence of his possible descent from Jesus through the Merovingian line. The church took the position that Jesus was never married and that such a belief in any descendants was heresy. The penalty for heresy was death.
Guilhem must constantly demonstrate and prove his loyalty to Charlemagne, thus satisfying the church that he is obedient to their beliefs. This gives him some freedom to seek what opportunities may occur to pursue his family researches. The Tension arises from his attempts to reconcile these two pursuits. It is heightened by an intermittent, touching but forbidden love story. All the time he is aware that there are those close to him who are persistently watching and seeking to find evidence that he is a heretic.
The action alternates between the two time periods, the 760s and the 800s, with Guilhem as a young, growing man and as the old warrior, looking back with a wary and sceptical eye. This enhances the flow of the story with additional excitement. Not only did I want to read on to find out ‘what happens next’, but also to find out, from the frequent flashbacks, ‘how something came about’ (such as the disfigurement of his nose). I soon realised that ‘all will become clear’, in one period or the other. An exhilarating technique.
The author has clearly done enormous research. Interspersed in the story is helpful and accurate detail about the historical context and many of its people, such as Charlemagne’s younger brother, Carloman, dying early (fortunate for everyone); the glories of early Islam, at least in Spain, in architecture, social organisation and medicine, and the Merovingian mystery itself. It moves back and forth between the south of France, Spain, Turkey, Egypt and Ethiopia, with the problems of travel at that time, and the smells. This period of history comes alive here.

A Certain Doubt edition by Michael Fincham Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is set in a period of history about which our knowledge is limited, a period when paths were taken which have led to the (western) world as we know it today. Not only is MF's book informative, for he's clearly put in a lot of effort researching his material, but it also provides an ideal background for 'a good yarn'. MF shows mastery in seizing his advantage to the full. Journey across the arid plains of Islamic Spain, the frozen forests of Northern Europe, or the mountains of Ethiopia - MF's prose and dialog has a colourful, quavering, authentic quality to it that makes it very easy to read. Immensely enjoyable.
Well written that created images in my mind of the experiences of Guilhem D'Autun, count of Toulouse and Abbot of Gellone in his search for the true purpose of his life and doubts about religious documentation. The period from 758 AD to 809AD graphically records Guilhem's search from France to Ethiopia containing his experiences with royalty and religious denominations. A complex love affair adds to the many challenges faced by Guilhem as well as his concern about his heritage. Although this book is a work of fiction, the author has woven historical facts throughout the story which gives it credence and is mind provoking.
'Historical novels not normally my cup of yes but this was an eye opener.!
Fascinating glimpse into the early middle ages with a story that combines exciting adventure with a delicately drawn poignant love affair. The growth of Guilhem (the hero) from child to adult and old age is developed in such a way that one lives his life with him every step of the way. Some brilliant tableaux bring Cordoba; Ethiopia;;Rome and other places vividly to life and all the time his internal conflicts make him so real.
The conflict between duty to his king and the church with his own extraordinary quest kept me up, and I read the book in two days...Heartily recommended.'
Being a lover of historical novels I picked up this book, even though I have not read anything by this author before, or even heard of him. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. This is a fascinating tale of the life of a man named Guilhem D'autun, count of Toulouse, and Abbot of Gellone covering the period of his childhood through his old age, and taking the reader on a journey, including France, Ethiopia and Alexandria during a period from 758 AD to 809AD. It is a story of a man's search for truth about his heritage, which encompasses a secret which could greatly jeopardize the
fabric of the Christian Church. The book also includes a touching, but complex love story.
Although this is a work of fiction with many threads of history intertwined, it is obvious that Mr. Fincham has done extensive research. I found this book a wonderful read, and I hope there is more to come from Mr. Fincham.
